Die Hard with a Vengeance is a 1995 action film and the second sequel in the Die Hard series. It was produced and directed by John McTiernan, who directed the first film and stars Bruce Willis as NYPD detective John McClane. Vengeance also stars Samuel L. Jackson as Willis' reluctant partner Zeus Carver and Jeremy Irons as the main villain Simon Gruber. The film was written by Jonathan Hensleigh and was followed by Live Free or Die Hard in 2007..

After a bomb explodes in the early morning at the Bonwit Teller department store in New York City, a man calling himself "Simon" (Jeremy Irons) telephones the police claiming responsibility, and demands that they play a game of "Simon Says" to prevent any more explosions. Simon orders suspended NYPD Lt. John McClane walk through Harlem wearing a sandwich board displaying racist slurs. Before McClane can be beaten to death by a group of outraged residents, Harlem shopkeeper and black supremacist Zeus Carver (Samuel L. Jackson) steps in to rescue McClane, and together they return to the precinct. There, Simon calls the precinct and takes credit for stealing several thousand pounds of an Astrolite-like bi-component explosive, and warns McClane and Carver to continue to play Simon Says to prevent any more bombs made of the material to go off.

McClane and Carver are instructed by Simon to reach the Wall Street subway station, 90 blocks away, to prevent a bomb on a subway train destined for the station from going off. McClane manages to get aboard the moving subway car and locate the bomb, but it still explodes, sending the train cars tearing through the station, though McClane's actions prevent anyone from being killed. McClane and Carver regroup with the police and FBI and learn that "Simon" is really former East German special forces officer Peter Gruber, and may be holding a grudge over the death of his brother Hans Gruber, who was killed by McClane at the end of the first film. Simon calls into the group and explains that he has planted a bomb in one of New York's public schools, and that any radio communication may set it off. This forces McClane and Carver to continue to follow Simon's instructions while the police, using every available man and resource without their standard means of communication, launch a search of every school.

With almost no officers remaining at Wall Street, Simon, his employer Mathias Targo, his mistress Katya, and numerous henchmen easily break into the Federal Reserve Bank of New York through the ruined subway station to steal all $140 billion USD of the gold bullion in its vaults, hauling it away in dump trucks. McClane comes to realize that Simon's games are a distraction and discovers the theft. Simon throws the city into chaos by publicly revealing the school bomb threat to a radio show, overloading the 911 switchboard, while McClane and Carver track Simon's trucks down to a tanker. The two are captured by Simon when they try to sneak aboard the tanker, and are tied to the real bomb, which Simon plans to detonate sending the bullion to the bottom of the ocean and ruining the world's economy. However, Simon has further deceived Targo, as the containers aboard the tanker only contain scrap metal, the real bullion having been sent elsewhere, and Katya kills Targo as they escape. McClane and Carver, also aware of Simon's deception, manage to escape in time. They regroup with the police and are treated for injures, believing that there is no hope for finding Simon. When prodded by Carver to call his estranged wife, Holly, McClane discovers on an aspirin bottle Simon gave to him a clue to Simon's location, a border town in Quebec. Just as Simon is ready to disperse his henchmen with the bullion, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, led by McClane, arrive and capture his men. Simon and Katya try to escape on a helicopter gunship, and when he spots McClane, Simon orders the pilot towards McClane so that he can fire upon him. McClane uses his last bullets to fire on a power line, knocking it down onto the helicopter, causing it to explode. Carver regroups with McClane, happy to put an end to the threat, and jokingly reminds him that he never finished his call to Holly, directing him to a nearby pay phone.

Die Hard 2, also known as Die Hard 2: Die Harder,[1] is a 1990 action film, and the second installment of the Die Hard series. It was directed by Renny Harlin, and stars Bruce Willis as John McClane. The film co-stars Bonnie Bedelia (reprising her role as Holly McClane), William Sadler, William Atherton reprising his role as Richard (Dick) Thornberg, Franco Nero, Dennis Franz, Fred Thompson, John Amos, and Reginald VelJohnson who makes a cameo appearance as Sgt. Al Powell.

Set once again on Christmas Eve, McClane is waiting for his wife to land at Washington Dulles International Airport when terrorists take over the air traffic control system. He must stop the terrorists before his wife's plane and several other incoming flights that are circling the airport run out of fuel and crash. During the night, McClane must also contend with airport police, maintenance workers, and a military commander that doesn't want his assistance.

The screenplay was written by Steven E. de Souza and Doug Richardson adapted from the novel 58 Minutes by Walter Wager. The novel has the same premise but differs slightly: a cop must stop terrorists who take an airport hostage while his wife's plane circles overhead. He has 58 minutes to do so before the plane crashes. The film was followed by Die Hard with a Vengeance in 1995, and Live Free or Die Hard in 2007.

A number of computer hackers, including Matthew "Matt" Farrell (Justin Long), upload programs they were paid to code to a woman named Mai (Maggie Q). Soon, all of the unnamed hackers are killed by planted explosives.

The next morning, Mai's boss and lover, Thomas Gabriel (Timothy Olyphant), gives orders to initiate his plot. The first phase involves taking control of the transportation grid (most particularly, traffic lights) and the stock market. The Federal Bureau of Investigation responds by initiating a nationwide roundup of all known top hackers. McClane is assigned to bring in Farrell, who lives in Camden, New Jersey; his unexpected arrival stops Farrell from unknowingly triggering the explosives meant for him. Mai has assassins as backup, but McClane is able to protect Farrell and kill most of their attackers.

McClane drives Farrell to the FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C., where Farrell is questioned. FBI director Bowman (Cliff Curtis) is uninterested in his surmise: Farrell believes that the terrorists are mounting a "fire sale" attack (so named because "everything must go"), taking advantage of the vulnerability of the nation's computer-controlled infrastructure. McClane and Farrell are driven in a convoy to a secure building, but Gabriel and Mai are able to locate Farrell and divert the convoy to gunmen waiting in a helicopter. In the ensuing firefight, McClane manages to send a police car airborne over a tollbooth to destroy the helicopter.

As McClane and Farrell recover, Gabriel nationally televises a fake video of the United States Capitol being demolished, setting off a public panic. Farrell believes that the power grid will be the next target, and directs McClane to a utility superstation in West Virginia, where they find Mai and her henchmen. McClane is able to kill all of them. When Gabriel tries to contact Mai, he reaches McClane instead, who taunts him with the news of his dead girlfriend. Farrell transmits Gabriel's image to the FBI, allowing them to identify their nemesis. Enraged, Gabriel redirects all the natural gas in nearby pipelines to the station, but McClane and Farrell escape just before the resulting explosion causes a power outage over most of the East Coast. Farrell suggests that they get help from his hacker friend Warlock.

Warlock (Kevin Smith), who has power generators ready in case of an outage, locates the program Farrell created for Gabriel. It is being used in a Social Security Administration building at Woodlawn, Maryland, an unlikely target. They discover that it is actually a front for a highly classified government facility which Gabriel instituted during his tenure at the National Security Agency (NSA). In case of a total computer systems failure—such as the one Gabriel manufactured—every critical personal and financial record across the country is sent to servers there to create a backup. Gabriel's men take over the facility and start downloading a copy. Warlock is also able to explain Gabriel's motivation: a talented hacker, he was once a top expert for the NSA. However, he was fired and his reputation was tarnished when he tried to sound the alarm about America's vulnerability to cyber-warfare.

Gabriel detects Warlock's hack and speaks with him, McClane, and Farrell. He tells McClane that he has taken McClane's estranged daughter Lucy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) hostage. Farrell triggers an alarm in the facility to alert the FBI. As McClane deals with Gabriel's forces, Farrell manages to encrypt the downloaded data to block access to it, but is captured. Gabriel and his men then leave the facility, Farrell and Lucy in tow, before the FBI arrive. McClane hijacks Gabriel's semi and pursues. Gabriel hacks into the military's computers to deceive a United States Air Force F-35B Lightning II pilot into believing that McClane is a terrorist. The semi is wrecked, but McClane survives and tracks Gabriel to a nearby warehouse.

McClane dispatches all but one of Gabriel's men, but Gabriel still holds Lucy and Farrell hostage. Gabriel shoots McClane in the shoulder and makes McClane watch as he prepares to kill Lucy and Farrell. However, when Gabriel grinds his gun into McClane's wound, McClane fires it through his shoulder, killing Gabriel. The last henchman is shot by Farrell. Afterwards, to McClane's chagrin, Lucy and Farrell show interest in each other.
