Van Helsing , Vanhalsing is a 2004 American action/horror film about vigilante vampire hunter Gabriel Van Helsing, written, produced, and directed by Stephen Sommers. The film stars Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale. The film opened on May 7, 2004.

The film begins in black and white, set in Transylvania, 1887. Doctor Victor Frankenstein brings to life the Frankenstein's monster but his triumph is cut short when an angry mob infiltrates the castle. Dr. Frankenstein has been aided in his experiments by his deformed assistant Igor, and Count Dracula. Dracula reveals that he helped Frankenstein so he could use the Monster to bring his undead children to life. He then kills Frankenstein when he refuses to help him. The Monster escapes with his father's body to a windmill which is burnt down by the mob, the Monster seemingly perishing in the destruction.

One year later, legendary monster hunter Van Helsing hunts Mr. Hyde in Paris, although their confrontation results in Hyde's death whilst fighting in Notre Dame. Van Helsing returns to the Vatican where he reports to the Knights of the Holy Order, who protect the world from evil. Van Helsing had lost his memory and had been taken in by the monks of the Vatican. Van Helsing's duty is to defeat evil forces and bring them back to the Order, but he has little success, since he usually kills them, like he did with Mr. Hyde. The leader, Cardinal Jinette, sends him to Transylvania to kill Dracula and prevent the last of the Valerious family from falling into purgatory; the family having been trying to kill Dracula for the past nine generations but all failed and unable to enter Heaven due to an ancestor's vow. Jinette also gave Van Helsing a torn piece of paper, with a Latin inscription, unknown for its purpose, which reads 'Deum ac ianuamimbeat aperiri', in English translates, 'In the name of God, open this door'. It also had an insignia, which matches the symbol on Van Helsing's ring. Jinette advises that he might find 'the answers you seek'. Van Helsing is aided by Carl, a friar who creates inventions.

Upon arriving, the two meet Anna Valerious, the last remaining Valerious family member, her brother Velkan having seemingly died whilst fighting a werewolf. They save her from Dracula's brides, Verona, Aleera and Marishka, Van Helsing killing Marishka with a crossbow arrow covered in holy water. Anna takes the two back to her castle where Dracula once lived, and encounters her brother Velkan who was believed to be dead, now a werewolf soon to be under Dracula's control. Van Helsing and Anna follow him to Frankenstein's castle where they find Dracula attempting to give life to his children, using Velkan as a conductor for lightning, in a way similar to the birth of the Monster. Anna frees Velkan but he becomes a werewolf again, stopping the life process. Dracula confronts Van Helsing, recognising him and addressing him as "Gabriel". Upon escaping, Van Helsing and Anna fall into a cave where they find the Frankenstein Monster still alive. Van Helsing decides to take him to Rome so he can be protected. The brides and Velkan chase after the heroes who are in a carriage, but they use a secondary carriage full of stakes to kill Verona. Velkan is shot by Van Helsing and dies after the chase, but he bit Van Helsing in the process, making him a werewolf when the next full moon occurs. Anna is captured by Aleera.

Van Helsing hides the Monster in a crypt, before he and Carl head off to save Anna. They rescue her but the Monster is captured. They return to Frankenstein's castle, but only to see that all the equipment had been taken. At Anna's castle, Carl explains that Dracula was the son of Anna's ancestor. Dracula was first mysteriously murdered in 1462, however made a covenant with the devil and was reborn. Carl also explains that though Anna's ancestor made the vow, he couldn't kill his own son. Instead, he banished Dracula to an icy fortress of no return, but then the devil gave him wings. Fortunately Anna's ancestor left clues in the castle, so that future generations would kill Dracula for him. Carl also found a picture of a werewolf and vampire fighting, but was unable to explain it. Van Helsing locates Dracula's hideout hidden through a portal disguised as a wall map, which was reopened by reading the missing inscription, 'In the name of God, open this door' and they plan to free the Monster.

As they enter, they hold Igor hostage and see the Monster, being dragged to the experiment, but they are unable to free him. The Monster quickly tells them that Dracula has a werewolf cure, before he disappears. The trio try to figure out why Dracula has a cure for werewolves. Then Carl realised that picture showed that only a werewolf could kill Dracula. Dracula used werewolves to do his bidding, but would have a cure to turn them back into human, in case they turned against them. Van Helsing frees the Monster but is attacked by Dracula in his true winged demonic form. Anna and Carl get the cure but are attacked by Aleera and Igor. Igor chases Carl, but is knocked off a bridge to his demise. The Monster holds off Aleera but the distraction doesn't last long. Aleera chases down Anna while she is crossing the bridge, but before she could bite her, Carl tossed a silver stake to Anna, who pierces it straight through Aleera's heart. Van Helsing and Dracula fight as a werewolf and a winged demonic bat, Dracula revealing that Van Helsing is really Gabriel, the Left Hand of God - as well as the one who originally murdered Dracula. He offers to restore Van Helsing's lost memories, but Van Helsing replies that some things are best forgotten and promptly kills Dracula by biting into his throat, also resulting in all of Dracula's offspring dying.

Anna arrives and injects the cure into Van Helsing, but not before he attacks and kills her. Anna is cremated on a cliff overlooking the ocean, Van Helsing seeing her and her family in Heaven, the family finally at peace. The Monster departs on a raft into the ocean. Van Helsing and Carl depart back to Rome on horseback.
